Pew Research Center surveyed 6,034 American adults in July 2022. Three in ten had used a dating site or app. Among partnered adults under 30, one in five had met their current partner on one.
Meeting online was only the start. Long-distance couples run whole relationships on video calls, voice notes and goodnight texts. In one diary study, couples living apart felt closer per conversation than couples sharing a city. Nobody calls that a virtual relationship anymore. It is a relationship that runs through a phone some of the time.
So when people ask whether virtual relationships will become normal, they usually mean something narrower: will it be normal to have a relationship with an AI?

For younger adults it is already common to try. In a survey by the Wheatley Institute and the Institute for Family Studies published in February 2025, almost one in four women aged 18 to 30 said they had chatted with an AI boyfriend or girlfriend. Among men the same age it was nearly one in three. Who those women are and what they look for has its own piece.
AI has moved into ordinary dating too. In the Kinsey Institute's 2026 Singles in America study of about 5,000 American singles, 39 percent had used AI in their dating lives. Among Gen Z it was 67 percent. Most of that use is practical: better messages, better matches, ideas for what to say next.
In August 2026 the Korean broadcaster SBS aired My AI Partner: Strange Love, a reality show in which well-known TV personalities went on dates with AI partners and decided at the end whether to leave as a couple. In July 2026 China brought in rules for AI services that simulate a human personality and offer emotional interaction, requiring providers to tell users they are talking to software.
Online dating went through similar stages: a few early users, then the jokes, then television, then regulation, then weddings where nobody asks how the couple met.
The same Kinsey study has a number that cuts the other way. Two thirds of singles, 66 percent, said AI could not replace human connection. Only 30 percent thought it could improve it. Interest in marriage is rising: 45 percent of singles said they want to marry, against 33 percent in 2010.
There is also a difference in kind. A dating app's job ends when two people meet. An AI relationship never hands you on to anyone, because the AI is the one on the other end. That is what makes it useful to some people and unthinkable to others. Familiarity will soften the reaction without erasing the difference.
So normal in the way online dating became normal, the default route to a partner for most people, is unlikely. Most people still want a human and they say so.

The more realistic future is already forming at the edges.
Talking to an AI about how you feel stops being strange. Two in five singles already use AI somewhere in their dating lives. A companion built for conversation, with memory and a personality of its own, is a small step from there.
A companion becomes one relationship among several. People use them in specific ways: rehearsing a hard conversation, decompressing after a long day, thinking out loud. That sits next to friends and partners rather than in their place.
Couples negotiate it the way they negotiate porn or flirting. Some will be fine with it and some will not. The rules belong to the couple. The honest test is whether you would hide it.
The products that last are honest about what they are. A companion that is clearly an AI and keeps your chats private fits into an ordinary life more easily than one that pretends to be a person.
For some people the future arrived early. Shift workers are awake when everyone they know is asleep, so the loneliness of working nights does not fit anyone else's calendar. People between relationships want company without starting something new. People who have never had a relationship want to practise without an audience. Partners in a long-distance relationship need something for the empty evenings and can keep it a supplement.
For them it already fits into an ordinary week.

For most people the answer will come down to ordinary evenings: who you talk to at 1am, who remembers what you said last Tuesday and whether that leaves you more able to connect with people or less.
If you are already living a little of that future, myVirtual.love is built for it. You pick a companion or create your own, a girl, a man or a trans woman, realistic or anime. Your companion keeps a set of facts about you in memory (20 on Free and Premium, 40 on Maxxx), takes voice calls paid with hearts and your chats stay private to your account. The free plan gives you 5 messages a day to see whether it fits. Unlimited chat is on Premium.
If what you want is the future the Kinsey numbers describe, a partner and maybe a wedding, use a companion to practise the conversation. Then go and have it with a person.
