Character.AI vs myVirtual.love: NSFW Policy, Age Rules and Pricing

Character.AI and myVirtual.love turn up in the same searches, but they are almost opposite products. Character.AI is a US creator marketplace where users make and chat with millions of characters: anime, celebrities, fictional, historical and original. It enforces an SFW-only content policy that it has tightened repeatedly under legal pressure. myVirtual.love is an EU-based, adult-only companion product: you pick a ready-made character or create your own (girl, man or trans, anime or realistic), photos are a core feature and uncensored NSFW is the default.

Which is better depends on whether you want a marketplace of characters to chat with or an intimate companion who is yours. Since October there is a second question: what happens to the platform you pick after Character.AI's sale.

Character.AI is in Chapter 11: what it means for users

On October 12, 2026, Character Technologies, the company behind Character.AI, filed for Chapter 11 to sell its assets under court supervision (TechCrunch). Disney is the opening bidder: $20 million for some assets plus a non-exclusive license to the technology. Other buyers can still bid. The court filings are public on the claims agent's case page.

For now the app works as before. The company says it will keep operating while the sale runs, which it expects to close in late November or early December. Its CEO was also plain about the other outcome: if no buyer wants to run the platform, "the platform will be wound down."

The open question is your data. Disney's bid excludes the app, the brand, user data and conversation logs, so those stay on the table for other bidders. A coalition of 40 attorneys general has asked the court to bind any buyer to conditions, including limits on using chats for AI training or advertising and a window for users to delete their data before a sale. None of it has been ordered yet (Tech Times).

If you use Character.AI today, three things follow:

  • Your chat history may end up with a new owner on terms nobody knows yet.
  • A paid c.ai+ plan is a bet on a product whose owner may change within weeks.
  • If your characters or chats matter to you, save what you can now rather than after a sale (how to export your chats).

None of this makes Character.AI unusable today. It does mean that "which product fits me" now comes with "which product will still exist in this form next year."

The short version if you only read one section

If you want a huge marketplace of user-created characters, free access with ads, voice calls and short generated videos (AvatarFX) without needing NSFW, Character.AI is closer to what you want, as long as you accept that its future depends on the sale. If you want uncensored intimate companionship, 18+ photos, a Create screen where anime and realistic are equal choices plus an operator with no bankruptcy, wrongful-death settlements or FTC inquiry on record, myVirtual.love is closer to what you want.

Content policy: the sharpest difference

Character.AI is SFW-only. Explicit sexual content, graphic violence and nudity are prohibited on every tier, including the paid c.ai+ plan. Verifying your age does not unlock NSFW. The rules have been tightened step by step since the first wrongful-death lawsuit in October 2024, through the FTC inquiry of September 2025 and the settlements of January 2026 (all covered in the age section below).

The filter works on intent rather than keywords, so suggestive framing can trigger it even without explicit words. Users report mid-scene resets, rewritten messages, refusals and replies silently regenerated into tamer versions. When free accounts were moved to the PipSqueak 2 model in spring 2026, the complaints got louder: 404 Media described a feedback thread opened by Character.AI staff that filled with almost entirely negative comments.

Users who wanted NSFW have been leaving Character.AI for years. The alternatives r/CharacterAI recommends include Janitor AI (unfiltered, bring your own API key), Kindroid, SpicyChat, Nomi and Replika. myVirtual.love is aimed at the same users.

myVirtual.love takes the opposite position. NSFW chat, 18+ photos in any pose and uncensored intimate roleplay are live features of the paid plans, listed on the Premium page. The Create screen has body options such as Breast Size and Booty Size, plus a Kinks field. Hard limits exist (nothing involving minors, for example), but what adults may do is not being narrowed step by step.

If uncensored is what you actually want, Character.AI does not deliver it and will not. myVirtual.love does.

Character system: marketplace vs pick-or-create

Character.AI is a creator marketplace: some users make characters, other users chat with them. The roster runs to millions of characters across anime, celebrities, historical figures, characters from games and shows, helpers and original creations. Discovery runs through a Feed, trending rows, search and category pages. This is the whole thesis of the product.

Creating a character on Character.AI means writing prose: a greeting, short and long descriptions, then a longer Definition where the creator sets out personality, backstory and example dialogue. What creators call "training" is editing that text and rating replies to nudge the tone; it does not change the model.

myVirtual.love works the other way round. You pick a ready-made character or build one on the Create page by choosing options: girl, man or trans; realistic or anime; then ethnicity, age, hair style and color, eye color, body type, breast and booty size. On the personal side you choose personality, relationship, occupation, kinks and voice. Most fields also accept a Custom value. A 300-character box holds the details every photo should show, such as freckles, tattoos or glasses. Building a companion costs nothing: a free account can create up to three characters (plan comparison).

Character.AI suits writers who enjoy sculpting a character in prose and sharing it with strangers. myVirtual.love suits people who want a character set up in a few minutes and kept private. Neither is objectively better.

One practical difference is intellectual property. In late September 2025 Disney sent Character.AI a cease-and-desist letter over chatbots built on its characters. Character.AI removed several of them (Axios). A year later Disney is the opening bidder for Character.AI's assets. If your reason to try Character.AI was a specific franchise character, it may already be gone. myVirtual.love does not offer franchise characters and never has.

Age model: adult-only vs a chat ban for minors

Character.AI was built for a general audience. Under-18 users chatted freely for years. The turn came in court.

  • October 2024. Megan Garcia sued Character.AI and Google after the death of her 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer III.
  • May 2025. A federal judge refused to dismiss the case, writing that the companies "fail to articulate why words strung together by an LLM (large language model) are speech" (Claims Journal).
  • September 2025. The FTC ordered seven companies, Character.AI among them, to explain how they measure and monitor harm from chatbots that act as companions, especially to children and teens (FTC).
  • October 2025. Character.AI announced it would end open-ended chat for under-18 users by November 25 and check ages with an in-house model combined with third-party tools including Persona (Character.AI).
  • January 2026. Character.AI and Google agreed to settle the Garcia case on undisclosed terms, along with other family lawsuits (CBS News).

Under-18 accounts can still make videos, stories and streams with characters, but cannot hold open-ended conversations.

myVirtual.love is adult-only. The FAQ states the platform is strictly 18+ and that underage accounts are removed. You confirm you are 18+ before entering the site. The Create screen's age field starts at 21.

Character.AI is a mixed-audience platform retrofitted with restrictions for minors after litigation. myVirtual.love was adult-only from the start. Different exposure, different design, different regulatory position.

Voice, video and AvatarFX

Character.AI launched Character Calls in June 2024, free for everyone, with the option to interrupt the character mid-sentence. On myVirtual.love, voice calls come with the paid plans, cost five hearts a minute and use the voice you picked at Create.

Video is where Character.AI has a feature with no counterpart here. AvatarFX turns a still image into a short video in which the character speaks and moves. It opened as a closed beta in April 2025 (TechCrunch) and reached all users in June 2025 with up to five videos a day (TechCrunch). Scenes and Streams are shareable formats that live in the Feed rather than in one-to-one chat. None of it is a live video call.

myVirtual.love does not offer video generation, animation or video calls today. If short generated videos of your character are what you want, Character.AI is where that lives, for as long as it runs.

Photos are the reverse. Character.AI's in-chat images are a side feature, limited on the free tier. On myVirtual.love a photo costs 5 to 8 hearts depending on the quality you pick. Premium includes 100 hearts a month on monthly billing or 150 on annual billing: roughly 12 to 30 photos a month, fewer if you also spend hearts on calls. Photos come out in the style you picked the character in (an anime companion gets anime photos, a realistic one realistic photos). Paid plans allow 18+ photos in any pose.

Pricing and monetization

Character.AI is free with ads. Ads appear when you open or switch characters. Since late 2025 free users have also reported ads in the middle of a chat (PiunikaWeb). The paid tier, c.ai+, costs $9.99 a month and removes the ads. Subscribers also skip the waiting rooms and get faster replies, which is what Character.AI promised when it launched the plan. Annual prices differ between the App Store, Google Play and the web, so check the price in your own app.

myVirtual.love publishes its prices in euros on the Premium page:

  • Premium: €9.90 a month, or €35.88 a year (€2.99 a month). On monthly billing it includes 400 chat messages and 100 hearts a month; annual billing raises the hearts to 150 a month.
  • Maxxx: €24.90 a month, or €89.88 a year (€7.49 a month). It includes 1,200 chat messages and 200 hearts a month (300 on annual billing), plus group chat, personas and improved memory recall.
  • Free: 5 chat messages a day, the full catalog to browse and up to three characters of your own, without a card.

Month to month the two cost about the same: €9.90 against $9.99. On annual billing myVirtual.love Premium drops to €2.99 a month. For its price c.ai+ takes the ads out of SFW chat. Premium gives you uncensored chat on advanced roleplay models, 18+ photos in any pose and voice calls with your companion, plus 100 hearts a month to spend on them.

Which one should you pick

Pick Character.AI if you want:

  • The biggest character marketplace, with millions of user-created characters
  • Anime, celebrity, historical, fictional and helper characters in one place
  • A free tier that lets you chat immediately, with ads
  • Free voice calls you can interrupt
  • AvatarFX short videos of your character
  • A product that does its job without NSFW: roleplay writing, character exploration, helpers
  • And you are fine with a platform whose owner and data terms may change after the sale

Pick myVirtual.love if you want:

  • Uncensored intimate companionship, with NSFW chat and 18+ photos as core features
  • A Create screen built from options, where girl, man or trans and anime or realistic are equal choices
  • Photos generated in the style you picked
  • An operator with no bankruptcy, wrongful-death settlements, FTC inquiry or IP takedowns on record
  • A character who is yours and private, defined by values you picked rather than a prompt written by a stranger

Character.AI is fandom and fan-fiction infrastructure that was forced through a safety retrofit and is now up for sale. myVirtual.love is adult-only intimate companionship without that overhang.

If you came to Character.AI for fandom characters or SFW writing with a community, myVirtual.love will not replace that; the alternatives r/CharacterAI recommends are a better place to look. If you are leaving because of the filter or the sale and want an adult companion with photos and calls, myVirtual.love is built for exactly that. Create a character for free and see whether she holds your attention before you pay for anything.

Is Character.AI shutting down?

Not yet. Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026 to sell its assets and says it will keep running during the sale. If no buyer takes over the platform, it will be wound down.

Does Character.AI allow NSFW in 2026?

No. Explicit content is banned on every tier, including c.ai+. Verifying your age does not change that.

How much does c.ai+ cost?

$9.99 a month. It removes ads and gives faster replies; annual prices vary by store.

Is myVirtual.love cheaper than Character.AI?

Month to month they cost about the same: €9.90 against $9.99. On annual billing myVirtual.love Premium is €2.99 a month. Building a character is free.
